Did it feel like the weather changed from cold to hot instantly?
Memorial Day weekend is finally here and it feels like it really snuck up on us this year.
If you, like many of us, have been so consumed with end of the year graduations, baseball games, dance recitals, baptisms, etc. that you forgot to plan your summer kickoff getaway, time is ticking!
If you own a campervan or conversion van, you know how easy it is to turn any weekend into a mini-vacation last minute. Owning a motorhome or conversion van allows you to pack up some overnight items, make a quick run to the grocery store and hit the road on the fly.
If you want to get away for a night or two this holiday weekend but haven’t made any camping reservations, you may want to read these tips to help with your spur of the moment Memorial Day campout.
Don’t give up hope if you go online or call for a campsite and everything comes back taken. Think outside of the box with these off the grid ideas:
Check out National Forests
Mt. Hood National Forest, Tahoe National Forest and Sierra National Forest are just some of the many campground that do not require advanced reservations. Be prepared, these camping areas tend to lack amenities such as hook-ups, showers and flush toilets. However, they are absolutely stunning in their beauty and scenery.
Also, no need to worry about overcrowding that is common in National Parks. These are perfect for a quick night or two away.
Check for cancellations
Unfortunately for some people, things come up. Fortunately for you, this is the perfect opportunity to step in and claim your spot. Call Friday morning and see if anything has opened up. You very well may come to a particular destination for a day trip and end up staying the night because someone couldn’t make it.
Take a look at BLM (Bureau of Land Management)
If you don’t have reservations at a desired campground but know to go online and look up the Bureau of Land Management areas near that destination, you may be able to camp in your first choice spots backyard.
The BLM’s goal is to preserve certain areas of land and allow people to explore and camp at 873 federally recognized areas and 35 million acres of National Monuments, National Conservation Areas, Scenic rivers, historic trails and wilderness study areas.
Don’t forget smaller parks
Small parks often times won’t fill up before some of the larger, more popular destinations. Regional and municipal parks offer many fun activities such as access to hiking, reservoirs, trails and rivers.
Remember, camping is about the experience, not necessarily the destination. A roaring campfire with friends or family is where the best memories will be made.
