Now that it’s 2018, your pretty used to seeing hybrid, electric and even self-driving cars (yikes!). What might cause you to take a second look is seeing a fully electric campervan!
Campervans are the greatest way to experience the outdoors and other drivable destinations. Purchasing a Motorhome allows you to conveniently park, rest, cook, bathe and easily bring your favorite personal items on your vacations. In addition to being incredibly versatile, Campervans can also help you save! After your initial vehicle investment, Motorhome trips will save you thousands of dollars on travel each year. Can you imagine if in addition to saving on airfare, dining and hotels, you also don’t have to pay for fuel?
Technology is working on making that happen! The folks at Nissan as well as Winnebago are releasing the RV industries first ever electric Motorhomes! We are likely still a long way from seeing electric RV’s becoming ‘mainstream’. However, Nissan and Winnebago are creating some pretty impressive machines. With the price of manufacturing high-powered, lithium-ion batteries going down, more and more electric powered RV prototypes will be produced.
The Nissan e-NV200: The e-NV200 by Nissan exudes the look of “the Motorhome of the Future”. It is compact, sleek and smart. The interior cabin features a pop-up sleeper bed (the top can be pushed up for a sleeping area), a kitchen complete with a refrigerator, stove, sink as well a removable table and swivel seats for dining. The rear bench can be used as a bed for additional sleeping. The e-NV200 has a sort of retro feel to its exterior with two-tone paint. Heating, water and gas systems come standard.
The e-NV200’s 40kWh battery pack has a range of about 124 miles. Right now if you are wanting to take it for a test drive, you will have to go to Spain! Nissan and Bram conversions are building these in Barcelona and they will be released for sales all over the country.
In Spain, the e-NV200 will run you around $30,000. This is relatively inexpensive as compared to the Hymercars or Mercedes Sprinters you will find all over Europe.
Winnebago: Winnebago has announced the company is looking to launch 33 and 38 foot all electric RV’s for commercial purposes (mobile dental clinics, blood banks and mobile classrooms). 6-8 high-powered lithium ion batteries power these RV’s. The charge is expected to last 85-125 miles per charge. While this chassis is not quite Road Trip ready, it certainly looks the part.
