In the beautiful Bay Area, wheelchair vans are helpful getting you to where you need to be. Whether it is a day out visiting a museum or an appointment at the doctor’s office, your customized mobility van is a reliable way to get you or a loved one to the desired destination.
However, for wheelchair users who rely on themselves to physically push their chair where they need to go, this can be extremely tiring and energy straining.
Fortunately, advancements in wheelchair technology offer ways to alleviate some of the physical stress moving your wheelchair can cause.
IntelliWheels
About 5 years ago, a company called IntelliWheels took notice of a group of former University of Illinois students’ concept that could potentially revolutionize wheelchair technology. This group modified a wheelchair that allowed the user to switch gears, making the chair go as fast as they wanted at a more efficient pace.
With most wheelchairs, hand rims are directly attached to the wheels. IntelliWheels uses force to create a torque that turns a gearbox in the center of the wheel. This force creates the forward motion that generates more mobility and speed. It’s similar to riding a bicycle on a low gear, uphill. Best of all, with no motors or batteries, it is maintenance free!
IntelliWheels has recently earned over 2 million dollars in grants. Their innovative technology is on the way to becoming more readily available to those who could greatly benefit from it!
Elevating Wheelchair
A team of graduate students at Arizona State University has come up with an innovative idea, inspired by the Space Innovation Program. In 2012, four students created a prototype of a typical wheelchair that elevates up to ten inches. This prototype was created with the notion that most wheelchair users lack height in order to reach things. Not being able to reach everyday items in a kitchen for example is a huge hindrance on wheelchair users. Heights also affect those in chairs socially; they are unable to communicate with others at eye level.
Although still in its creation, the “UP Wheelchair” is intended “to give people independence and re-establish a sense of normalcy,” according to the ASU UP Wheelchair team. This exciting innovation could mean a greater sense of freedom for those in wheelchairs.
The Frisco Bay and Silicone Valley area is all about advancements in technology and life-enhancing innovation. New products for those with disabilities should be at the front of the line. Having the equipment and support you need for yourself or a loved one can be so important in enhancing day-to-day life.
