How to keep your kids entertained…and you sane!
Taking a road trip in your Class B motorhome or RV is a great way to plan a family vacation. Road trips are a fantastic way to explore places you might never think to go, and are typically easier on a family’s budget. Children and adults alike will find there is so much to do on the open road!
However, while life-long memories are made on family trips, they are not without some stress.
Let’s face it, parenting is not always relaxing. We can all recall a family vacation that turned into a nightmare! Employing some of these useful road trip hacks can ensure a smoother, more pleasant and memorable family vacation that would make even the Griswolds take it easy for a bit!
“Are we there yet?”
Have you ever heard this phrase on a longer car ride, let alone a full-scale road trip?
If you’ve been in a car with kids for more than 20 minutes, we’re sure you have. Sure, these days motorhomes are equipped with game consoles, DVD players, I-pad charging stations, Wi-Fi and flat screens.
So you might be surprised when your child or children get stir crazy quickly, even with these awesome entertainment options. Plus, you’re not exactly feeling like “Parent of the Year” when you tell your kids to watch TV for eight hours straight.
Below is a list of 5 fun family games to play while driving that will get your children engaged and maybe even provide a few laughs along the way.
1. Road Trip Bingo: This is like bingo, but combined with a scavenger hunt! Each child receives a flat surface like a book or a clipboard. Print out some free printable bingo cards and give them to each kid. Provide zip-lock bags with 16 coins. When your little one finds an item on their card, they place the coin on the square they have spotted. The first player to cover all of the squares in a straight line wins!
2. 20 Questions: This is really straightforward and great for younger children.
The first player thinks of a person, place or thing. Everyone else takes turns asking “yes” or “no” questions. After each question, the questioner gets one guess. Continue until a player guesses correctly.
3. I-Spy: This is a great one for your toddlers and children under 7. You will be amazed at how long your little ones stay entertained with this one. One person spies something and recites the line, ending in a clue (ex: “I spy with my little eye, something blue!”). Everyone else takes turns trying to guess the mystery item.
4. License Plate Game: This one can take up a good chunk of time on your road trip. It’s a good geography lesson as well. Use a pen and pad of paper or a map, write down or circle all of the different license plates you spot on other cars while driving. First one to get all 50 states wins!
5. Spot the Car. If you are traveling with older kids, such as preteens, this
might be more age appropriate. “Spot the Car” is like a scavenger hunt, where instead of looking for license plates you will be looking for different car models.
These are just a few suggestions that can be really fun ways to engage the family while trekking to exciting destinations in your RV or Class B motorhome.
