Last week you read about how to drive your RV or camper van safely in the rain and snow. This week were going to take a look at another dangerous weather factor; driving in extreme wind!
Due to the boxy nature of class B motorhomes and RV’s, the wind factor should always be accounted for. Keep in mind some of this treacherous weather information and defensive driving tips for your next campervan or RV trip. One of the great things about owning a motorhome is having the ability to travel and explore many different regions. Since weather conditions can drastically vary, knowing how to drive your class B safely can help you avoid an unfortunate accident.
How much wind is too much?
Wind factors will affect your motorhome or RV differently depending on the vehicles weight, height, alignment and distribution of weight. A small class C or class B motorhome can be affected by winds at miles per hour of 10 or more. Wind speeds of more than 15 to 20 miles per hour may not be safe, especially if your driving a larger class C. If you’re driving on a highway with many semi’s passing by in addition to high winds, you may be in for an even “shakier” ride. Use the following tips when you notice wind is affecting your vehicle.
- Your first instinct may be to over steer when you feel strong winds coming your way. DON’T! Over steering can contribute to instability. Remain calm and keep a steady grip on your wheel.
- Driving in areas, particularly the southwest where wind gusts can be a common occurrence, slow down. Continue at a reduced speed, maybe even 40mph in the slow lane until you can pull over. When you pull over, remember this: if the wind is strong enough, your RV or motorhome could tip. Find a freeway underpass to rest under until the wind subsides is ideal if you’re in the middle of nowhere.
- Take the scenic route! It may slow you down but if you can take the back roads as opposed to the highway, driving conditions will be much safer. Plus you can typically enjoy your locations surroundings much more.
- Above all, no destination is worth making on time at the cost of a possible accident. If you notice your vehicle is tipping or you feel uncomfortable driving in the wind, locate the nearest parking lot and point your RV directly into the wind.
