Looking for the right camper van to suit your recreational needs? Travel vans can be eclectic and are often as varied as their owners. Some of the more common camper van categories are: Volkswagen Van, Standard Van, Luxury Conversion Van and Minivan.
If you’re considering purchasing a camper van, do your research! Find out which type will be best for you by reading below.
Volkswagen Camper
The Volkswagen Camper is an iconic symbol of America road trip culture. Everyone can identify with the classic rounded “hippie” van of the 1960’s. Unfortunately, these days, the beloved van is very difficult to find and if you do come across one, beware of the steep price tag! In 2013, the type 2 Volkswagen camper vans were discontinued due to changing safety requirements and airbag compliance.
If you are looking for that original VW camper experience, your best bet would be the Westfalia Camper. They are pretty basic, containing a bed, sink, stove and refrigerator. The Westfalia claims to “drive and sleep four”; however, there is only one full-size double bed inside the van and the other is formed on top of the camper when the ‘pop-top’ roof is formed. It has been described as similar to a bunk bed setup.
Standard Van
Standard cargo vans, such as the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana, can be outfitted with beds, sinks and refrigerators. These models typically don’t have all the bells and whistles that come with a luxury conversion van, but with proper research you can find a standard van at a relatively low price tag.
Luxury Conversion Van
If road tripping and traveling is something you are passionate about, then you simply must test drive a luxury conversion van. Outfitted with comfortable sofa beds, TV’s, entertainment systems, and often refrigerators, bathrooms and sinks, the luxury conversion van takes camping in style – or “glamping” (glamorous-camping) – to a whole different level!
If you order a brand new luxury conversion van, you can customize it with just about anything you desire. If you’re looking to save a few bucks but also don’t want to miss out on all of the amenities, a used conversion van is a fantastic option instead.
Another bonus for the luxury conversion van is the fact that it can double as your everyday car, which is especially great for families.
Minivan
If you are looking for something a little more compact, a minivan can always double as a camper van. They drive more like standard vehicles and can be easily parked just about anywhere. Minivans often come with DVD/TV entertainment combinations and can be customized to sleep two adults. Beware though, they can be snug if you’re looking to travel with 3+!
