The History of Surfing and Camper Vans
Since the 1960’s the iconic camper van has been a favorite vehicle of surfers. They offer plenty of space for camping at the ocean, surfboards and beach babes. But what is the the history of the beloved camper van? How did it make its way sunny California coast? The evolution of camper vans in surf culture may surprise you.
In 1949 the VW split screen transporter was developed from a design sketched by Ben Ponn. The camper was well received by the public and press. This was the first vehicle of its type, the driver in the front counterbalanced the weight of the engine in the back. It was a very welcome and light hearted change from the dreary military vehicles of World War II. Due to its curved and fun designed it was nicknamed ‘splittie’.
In 1968 the new and improved VW2 with bay windows was the next camper to emerge. These vans were so versatile they were converted into taxis, fire engines, builders vans and even ambulances.
Around this same time the spirit of free love and adventure was ever present. In California with its vast highways running along the coast, these camper vans quickly became a part of the popular surf culture. The space inside made them the ideal surfing and camping van. Surfers began stripping down and customizing the interiors to fit their needs. Beds, sound systems, and ladders to the roof for easy board access made these the ideal method of transport. This type of customization combined with the adventure these vans offered made them the vehicle of the hippie counter culture.
