The Overland Expo is the world’s most unique event for do-it-yourself travel enthusiasts. Every year the team behind the Overland Expo, which is comprised of scientists, journalists, artists and explorers, comes together to throw a huge festival of sorts dedicated to “overlanding.”
What is “overlanding”?
According to the folks at the Overland Expo, “overlanding” is a way to describe exploring by your own self-contained means, usually by vehicle. It’s been a traditional way to describe safaris in Africa or off-roading in Australia. For overlanders, the journey is just as important as the destination or the activities that are done just to get to the destination.
The Overland Expo, which occurs in both the East and the West, goes on for three days. The 2016 Overland Expo West took place in May in Flagstaff, Arizona, while the Overland Expo East will be held on October 7-9 in Asheville, North Carolina. Both draw crowds of thousands and offer music, food, film festivals and happy hours. Kids age nine and under are free with an adult and love it. Expo attendees have a unique opportunity to meet thousands of other “overlanders” from around the world.
