Tips to make your first few trips in a RV or class B motorhome easy and enjoyable!
Has it been a dream of yours to pack up in a campervan and explore the open road? Do you have concerns about being prepared or if you’ll even like traveling in an RV?
You aren’t alone.
Many people who haven’t experienced the thrill of an extensive road trip may have questions about what it’s like to travel, eat, sleep and (go to the bathroom) in a class B motorhome or RV.
But not to worry! There’s a reason why millions of American’s love their campervans. Vacations in your campervan allow you to partake in a whole different experience as opposed to flying to your destination. You will not want to miss out on the adventures you can experience on a well planned road trip.
One of the best ways to get into the campervan spirit is to do your research and listen to tips from seasoned RV folks. Hopefully, this list will relieve any stress you have prior to takeoff:
- Don’t try to cover too much ground in one day. If you’re planning a long-distance road trip and are under time constraints, use caution. In general, trips where you don’t try to cover a huge amount of miles each day are more enjoyable and safer. Some RVers stick to a rule of no more than 300 miles per day. Once you hit the afternoon, setting up camp and enjoying the surroundings is a great way to really take in the atmosphere and allow your personal batteries to recharge.
- Make a list. Lists are a great way to ensure you have everything you need prior to taking off. Making a side trip to Camping World or Wal-Mart can be a major bummer when you’re excitedly trying to get to your destination. Have a separate list for categories such as food, equipment, campervan maintenance supplies and so on.
- Get a hotspot. Disconnecting from technology is one of the best parts of going on a trip in your motorhome or RV. But lets face it, in today’s Internet-driven world having access to Wi-Fi can be a huge help! Many RV parks and public spots will allow you to log on; however, purchasing a portable hotspot from AT&T or Verizon can be incredibly useful.
- Remain flexible. One of the greatest things about RV trips is that you never know exactly where the road will take you! Remaining open to changes of plans and hiccups – such as weather conditions or road foreclosures – will save you a lot of stress and may end up working out better than anticipated.
- Know your vehicle. Campervans and class B motorhomes are pretty straightforward vehicles. They’re easy to drive and convenient to park. However, getting to know the in’s and out’s of some of the equipment can take a little time and patience. Becoming acquainted with your vehicle will also save you a ton of stress in the case of a malfunction. RV’s and larger class A and C vehicles are a little more complicated. Make sure the dealer or rental company has done a thorough walk-through of the vehicle prior to departure.
