Below is half of our list of California’s Top Ten Winter Camping Destinations. Perfect for traveling in a class B motorhome, conversion van or RV, this list is sure to not disappoint.
10. Borrego Palm Canyon, Anza Borrego Desert State Park
Anza Borrego Desert State Park offers as warm a desert camping setting as California can claim. The Borrego Palm Canyon Campground, which is located just inside the park from the town of Borrego Springs, offers over 100 sites, many with hookups and just a few trail miles away from California’s third largest native desert fan palm grove. You can enjoy a lengthy hike up Borrego Springs and also have considerably close access to town. This campground is popular and sites get claimed early, so it is best to call in advance.

9. Mobai Regional Park, Colorado River Valley
Located in the far eastern part of San Bernardino County, this park is a hidden gem, often missed by those traveling east on I-40. The park sits along an old channel of the Colorado River, 450 feet above sea level. Most sites have a “river beach” feel to them. The temperatures are incredibly pleasant in wintertime.

8. “Hole In The Wall”, Mojave National Preserve
This campground offers gorgeous views of volcanic rock and towering desert landscapes. The campsite’s proximity to the canyon cuts down on wind, keeping you a little more shielded at night. Shielded from the lights of Las Vegas, this is one of the darkest parts of the preserve. The stars at night are astonishing. Many groups use this area for astronomical observation. You will not be disappointed!

7. Big Basin Redwoods State Park: Wastahi Campground
Big Basin Redwoods, located just 40 or so minutes outside of San Francisco, is home to some of the state’s most fantastic “Natural Skyscrapers.” At 329 feet, the tallest is called the “Mother of the Forest”; it’s a magnificent site to see! Due to smaller crowds in the fall and winter, Big Basin’s grandeur is better seen in these cooler seasons. Check out the 29-mile Skyline to Sea trail for a challenging hike and fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean.

6. Bothe-Napa Valley State Park: Bothe Campground
In late fall/early winter, there is no better time to visit California’s gorgeous wine country. Bothe Campground has 50 sites and more than 10 miles of hiking trails. Ritchey Creek flows by and picnic tables are all around – perfect for afternoon wine and cheese tasting.
