Top Tips for New Handicap Drivers Ready to Hit the Road

Sometimes we need to take a break from driving. A variety of circumstances can keep you from operating a car, and a disability needing rehabilitation is one common reason.

When you and your doctor decide it’s time for you to get back to driving, it can be both exciting and nerve-racking. For many, the experience feels similar to when they first got their driver’s license at 16, and they find themselves asking, Am I really ready for this?

Each state has its own approach to granting licenses to disabled drivers. Any person who discloses their disability when applying for their license who can pass a theory test and a practical test is eligible, but having a handicap van or vehicle that has been modified to fit your disability is another requirement.

What makes a vehicle ADA compliant?

The modifications required for a handicap van are based on your specific disability. While requirements can vary from state to state, below is a list of requirements that should typically be followed:

  • The vehicle must have power steering, power locks and doors and power seats.
  • Seat belts should be properly recessed to adjust to your fit.
  • If you are unable to use standard foot pedals, the van should be modified to feature driving aids like hand controls for the brakes and the gas.
  • A wheelchair ramp, lift or transfer board or both may be required to enter and exit the vehicle safely.
  • Your shifter should be easy to move.
  • Handgrips should be installed throughout the vehicle.

Vehicle modification laws: Both federal and state laws have regulations regarding the installation of handicapped adaptive equipment. If you plan on modifying your vehicle to be mobility-driver friendly, you must abide by federal safety standards.

There are authorized auto body shops and mobility vehicle dealers that comply with a certification process that ensures they can safely modify or sell these vehicles.

What is a CDRS?

A CDRS is a certified driving rehabilitation specialist. A CDRS is a professional who works with people of all ages and physical abilities to find alternative transportation solutions.

Most of these specialists have backgrounds in both healthcare and driver education. They have completed comprehensive, specialty training that allows them to recognize the specific needs of different disabilities and foster tailored driving solutions.

If you are planning on returning to driving after a disability has kept you away for an extended period of time, consider working with a CDRS. A CDRS can help you readapt to driving and really learn how to safely operate your new or modified vehicle.

Prior to getting back behind the wheel, there are a few things to consider.

Make sure your vehicle is equipped for your specific disability

Getting in contact with a CDRS can help you find the mobility equipment you may require to comfortably and safely operate a vehicle. Your doctor, physical therapist or medical provider will likely refer you to a CDRS if they know you will need a modified van or car.

Lifts and specialized captain’s chairs may be required depending on your specific disability.

If you do require a modified vehicle, make sure you locate a trusted car dealer that specializes in selling  new and used mobility vans and SUVs, which can include wheelchair minivans or full-sized wheelchair vans.

Quality equipment should not be sacrificed for price! Remember, your safety can depend on it.

Be aware of your limits

Getting behind the wheel after a lengthy break from driving may cause you some anxiety. Do not place unrealistic expectations on yourself to drive as much or as far as you did prior to your disability.

This is where a CDRS can be extremely helpful. They will tell you what you should expect during your transition back to driving.

Don’t forget your vehicle and equipment will need diligent maintenance

Any car requires routine maintenance to keep it running safely and avoid any seriously expensive repairs, but maintenance for a mobility-equipped vehicle is especially important. Always make sure all hinges, lifts and electronic components are in tip-top shape for maximum comfort and safety on the road.
