The term “conversion van” can often be used broadly to describe any passenger van that has been outfitted with specific features by a third-party customization business. From accommodating passengers with special needs to designing a vehicle specifically used for camping, conversion vans can be created to satisfy a wide range of needs.
Class B camper vans belong in the family of conversion vans; however, there are very specific differences between a Class B and your average conversion van.
At first glance, the conversion van and class B look very similar. Both are roughly the same size – larger than a standard cargo van, yet easily fits into most residential driveways. Many will have raised roofs in order to comfortably stand inside. Both conversion vans and class B motorhomes have many amenities that make them incredibly useful for travel. However, there are some key differences between the two. Depending on what your needs are, you will want to make sure you have selected the right one.
Different Uses
Conversion vans and class B motorhomes can be modified for very different uses. Conversion vans are stock passenger vans that can be designed and outfitted for luxurious everyday use. Conversion vans are often used for shuttling clients or tour groups. Plush interior leather seating, limousine lighting and state-of-the-art entertainment systems make the conversion van a serious upgrade from a passenger van. Many larger families find that conversion vans are a great, spacious and comfortable alternative to an everyday minivan.
Class B motorhomes, on the other hand, are smaller, easier-to-drive alternatives to full-sized RVs. They can be equipped with a fold down bed, mini-kitchen, television and restroom. These features make the class B camper van fantastic for overnight trips; however, these vans are somewhat less practical for everyday use around town.
Structural Differences Between Conversion Vans and Class B’s
The shells of both conversion vans and class B motorhomes are structurally very similar. The interior of a conversion van is commonly equipped with two sets of captain’s chairs and a third row sofa that can be folded into a bed. The class B is essentially a smaller RV with a small bathroom, kitchen and sleeping area.
Technology
Since the main purpose of a class B motorhome is to provide camping amenities, the technology within these vans is usually geared around such. Class B motorhomes will often come with microwaves, mini refrigerators, stove-tops and a climate control unit in the rear.
The technology of a conversion van, however, is commonly more about providing the passengers with a luxurious riding experience. State-of-the-art entertainment systems such as flat screen TVs, video-game consoles, Wi-Fi, heated seats and beverage coolers are commonly found in conversion vans. One of the nice things about a conversion van is the rear row sofa bed can be folded down for overnight sleep use. If you’re less serious about using your van for camping, but would like the option to use your vehicle for sleep, a conversion van is a great option.
