One of the first images that comes to mind for people who are new to the recreational vehicle world is the iconic, silver, shiny dome like Airstream trailer! Is it a space ship? Maybe, some sort of chrome igloo? Until you have entered the unique looking travel trailer, you have no idea the utility and luxury these mobile dwellings have to offer!
Airstream, like many other recreational vehicle companies started as an American dream! In 1929, Wally Byam built the first Airstream after coming up with the idea to engineer a travel trailer that moved like a stream of air. Wally, a hard worker was supporting himself through Stanford University by working a variety of jobs. Wally did everything from sell concessions at University baseball & football games to earning money as a Sailor on his summer breaks. His love of travel and adventure combined with intelligence and hard work gave way to one of the most beloved recreational vehicle companies today!
The first Airstream prototype in 1929 was built on a Model T chassis with a tent on top. After quickly realizing the tent was no good in rain and wind, Byam replaced it with the teardrop permanent shelter you see today. Byam found that this trailer was easy to tow and after putting in an ice chest and a stove, very convenient for travel! The rest is history and after creating the company in 1931, Airstream has become a household name.
Design, quality, authenticity and freedom are the tenants of the Airstream brand. The company’s design motto is “lets not make changes, only improvements”. In the last 80 plus years, very little has been done to the initial Airstream design. Each Airstream trailer is built using a lightweight aluminum superstructure. With several improvements to engineering over the years, the travel trailers design allows for a smooth aerodynamically sound handling. This aluminum superstructure is lightweight and allows for greater fuel capacity and quicker drive times than other travel trailers.
