Traveling with a Wheelchair: Tips for a Successful Summer Vacation!

One of the many incredible things about conversion vans is they have made the open road far more accessible to those in wheelchairs. Traveling with your wheelchair can be fun and exhilarating, but requires a bit more planning.

Before you hit the open road, be sure to follow some of the tips below to ensure you get the most out of your summer vacation.

List the Places You Want to See

It can be exciting to get in the car and explore the open road. However, a little planning can go a long way. Researching the places you want to check out and their handicap accessibility can make your trip go a lot smoother.

If considering a trip to a national park, for instance, be sure to get your access pass. It’s free to those with disabilities!

Check Ahead for Hotels

If you’re not planning on sleeping in your van, be sure to call ahead to your destination hotels. When making a reservation, be sure they are aware of those in your party in a wheelchair. They can often make accommodations more accessible.

Prep Your Wheelchair

Make sure to do a thorough check of your wheelchair to make sure it is in tip-top shape. A nice tune up and some fresh parts (if needed) can ensure your wheelchair is ready for you or your travel companion to enjoy the visit.

Hopefully your wheelchair will never get misplaced, but just in case be sure to attach a label with your contact information.

Check with Your Doctors

Before you venture out on your trip, it may be a good idea to check with your doctor to ensure your body is ready to travel the open road. It’s also a great time to make sure any prescriptions you may need are refilled or updated.

Plan for Emergencies/Bring Spare Tools or Parts

Having your primary physician’s number on hand is a great idea in case you run into a medical emergency. Membership to a roadside assistance club can also be a valuable asset.

Be prepared for any unexpected mishaps with your wheelchair. Spare tubes, tire inflators, and any other parts may be very helpful in a tight situation

Above all, ENJOY YOUR SUMMER VACATION!!!!! If you’re looking for a mobility van to take you to the destinations you desire, visit us at Classicvans.com. We have a great selection of mobility vans and are experts in the art of a road trip!
